Faith in Health
After a nationwide grant selection process, The Sidran Institute was one of 30 U.S. sites chosen to initiate a pilot project from the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (a section of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, SAMHSA). The grant began January 1, 2006, for six months duration. Sidran was subsequently asked to continue the project for an additional six months. Sidran’s project, Faith in Health, incorporates the help of faith leaders to teach the traumatic origins of risky behaviors and to assist in prevention work with congregants and community members.

The purpose of the grant was to develop strategies to combat substance abuse and HIV/AIDS in faith-based, minority communities. Sidran’s innovative approach was to use a train-the-trainer format to build expertise among faith leaders and health ministers in a program that clearly connects trauma and the behaviors that lead people toward substance abuse and sexual risk taking. Sidran’s role in the Maryland project was to conceptualize, develop a curriculum, and deliver training to faith and health ministries in urban East Baltimore. Sidran used experts in trauma, health education, and parish nursing to create a multi-faceted curriculum delivery for the project. It included:
  • A series of Faith in Health train-the-trainers sessions for clergy, parish nurses, and lay ministers representing dozens of areas throughout East Baltimore
  • Consultation on implementing the program in churches and faith-based community programs
  • A follow-up packet, including training slides annotated with talking points,  handouts, and a filmed DVD “refresher course” for continuation of knowledge exchange.
A limited number of sets of these materials are now available for those outside the project area. Email orders@sidran.org for more information.
